Walton-on-the-Naze sits on one of Essex's most exposed coastlines, and the chimneys on its Victorian seafront properties suffer some of the fastest deterioration we see anywhere in the region.
The town's older terraces and guest houses along the seafront and back streets were built during the Victorian seaside boom, and their brick stacks have been exposed to North Sea gales for over a century. Salt-laden air works into the mortar joints, frost then expands any absorbed moisture, and within a few seasons the masonry begins to crack and separate. When a stack has reached that stage, rebuilding from the roof level upward is both safer and more cost-effective than repeated patching.
